POSITION SUMMARY:  :  This position will provide support to the classroom and assist the classroom or resource teacher in achieving student learning objectives per Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  Specific duties will include working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve and maintain the skill levels of the class as a whole.  Will also assist with classroom management and implement student specific behavior plans as appropriate as well as providing for special health care needs.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

 

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:   While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a typical classroom environment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position. Minimal travel may be required.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:  (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)

Essential Functions:

1. Assist the classroom teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on IEP and understanding individual students needs, interests and abilities.

2. Takes initiative to guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up as assigned by the teacher.

3. Contributes significantly to the implementation of efficient routines and procedures within the classroom and throughout the school environment.

4. Complete specialized training and demonstrates the ability to implement skills obtained through training.

5. Demonstrates the skills necessary to meet the needs of medically fragile students when needed.

6. Serve as chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher(s).

7. Under the supervision of certified teachers, assist in the areas related to personal, social, and instructional needs of students.

8. Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.

9. Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (lunchroom, playground, restrooms, classrooms, assemblies, field trips, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.

10. Implement behavior plans for students with aggressive behaviors to ensure the safety of the student and those around him/her.

11. Being proactive and do what is necessary to maintain a relationship of trust with teacher(s) and student(s) you serve.

12. Assist with the toileting needs of students including getting on/off the toilet, toileting, diapering and/or help with clothing.

13. May be required to lift/position students to support transitioning from one location to another.

14. Assist with basic hygiene for students; for example, hand washing and toothbrushing.

 

General Functions:

1. Assist as needed for district and state-wide testing per student accommodations.

2. Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and makeup work as assigned by the teacher.

3. Assist with such group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.

4. Alert the teacher to any special problems about an individual student.

5. Record keeping as assigned by teacher.

6. Under teacher supervision, gather data on goal progress and behaviors.

7. Assist students with assistive technology needs as required for academic success.

8. Assist with students basic needs like feeding and toileting, along with assisting students with community based outings and work experience.

9. Other duties as assigned by Classroom Teacher or Building Administration.

 

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:                                                                                                                                       

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to relate well to a variety of individuals, including students, parents, staff, and the community.  Ability to maintain professional demeanor at all times, maintain high level of confidentiality and perform work without continuous supervision.

 

Education:  HS Diploma or GED equivalent required.  Some college coursework preferred.
